Manga Recommendation #1: Yakusoku no Neverland

Author: Kaiu Shiurai / Artist: Posuka Demizu

Synopsis: Emma and her friends have a pretty good life at the orphanage they grew up in. Though the rules may be strict, the caretaker is kind. But why are the children forbidden from ever leaving…?

This just started in 2016 at Weekly Shonen Jump. I was skeptic about reading this since the art kinda threw me off. But I was wrong. Very wrong. I thought that it was going to be a melancholic drama thing but I was wrong again. This manga broke all my first impressions. I think the plot idea is really fresh (this concept has been used in a few manga series before), but the added elements make the whole story a lot more interesting. I like it how the characters are very dynamic and clever (yes, even the antagonists also). As of now it has been 20 chapters, and has been getting obvious (but not too much), and has been consistently high in the Jump rankings. But even so, I can’t see this series having a long run because like Red Sprite, the plot is restricting; and the 3 main characters remind me of Naruto, Shikamaru, and Sasuke. And even the supposed plot twists don’t surprise me. But I’d still recommend this because I’m looking forward to see how the Shiurai-sensei will develop the story.
